The Cascade Pacific Energy Program is working with Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) to develop and manage an Agricultural Energy Efficiency Pilot program in western Oregon.

The program goal is to develop projects that will decrease agricultural energy use by 10 percent.

CPRCD is working in collaboration with Wy'East RC&D, which will develop and manage the pilot program in northcentral Oregon.

The Energy Program will continue assisting agricultural producers and rural small businesses with renewable energy projects, as well as energy efficiency projects that are not powered by BPA.

For information, contact Terry Johnson, Energy Program Manager, at 541-760-6444 or terry@casco.net.

Local Food Connection Keeps Growing

The fourth Local Food Connection was held at Lane Community College on February 1, 2010 with attendance at 241 participants, a 29% increase over last year.  One of the major themes of the conference was the introduction of Ecotrust's Food Hub, an online marketing tool where farmers, fishermen and ranchers can sell their locally grown products to restaurants, hospitals, food stores and school districts.  Several training opportunities on the Food Hub were provided by Ecotrust staff.

Other workshops included: Understanding Food Certifications, Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy for Farms and Rural Businesses, Social Media, Food Safety, The Latest News on GMOs, Growing Local Markets for Beans and Grains and Butchering a Lamb.

One of the major draws to the event is a flavorful, nutrient-rich lunch buffet with fresh ingredients donated by local farmers and ranchers.  The event was sponsored by CPRCD, Eugene Water and Electric Board, Oregon Tilth and Lane Community College.

Mark your calendars for next year's event on February 7, 2011.
