Special Thanks to Siuslaw Watershed Council

CPRCD extends special thanks to Siuslaw Watershed Council, winner of CPRCD's Project of the Year award for its annual “Siuslaw Riparian Restoration & Release” project.    Liz Vollmer-Buhl and Nancy Nichols accepted the award for the Council at CPRCD's Annual Meeting in September.

Since 1999, this project has annually distributed 10,000 native tree & shrub seedlings to over 300 landowners in the Siuslaw watershed to plant along stream banks on their properties.  Each year this activity restores 50 acres of stream habitat in the Siuslaw watershed.

In the long term, the project benefits water quality for threatened salmon species by reducing stream temperature and erosion, and providing native flora that attracts the insects salmon eat.   Landowners receive hands-on instruction on how to plant and maintain the young tree and shrub seedlings. The Council monitors the success of the new plantings each year, and provides mowing or spraying services the following spring to remove competing vegetation and improve survival for the young plants.

This annual event provides education to local landowners and jobs in the community.  Cascade Pacific thanks the Siuslaw Watershed Council for its tireless dedication to restore stream habitat and provide local watershed restoration jobs each year.
